North Salt Lake Utah Hotels
After efforts to build overflow protection in Midvale failed last month, the Salt Lake City Council stepped in and voted again to intervene, this time to open temporary shelter for the homeless at a hotel on the city's west side. The "End Homelessness" announced on Friday, city leaders said they were ready to work to address the needs of the homeless in the community. On Thursday night, the Salt Lake City City Council passed a 5-4 vote to pass a temporary land use ordinance that allows the hotel to serve as a shelter for the homeless.
The proposed hotel would increase the capacity of the county's emergency shelters to 4,444 beds by 2030, more than double the number of beds it had last winter, officials said.
If the contract with the hotel owner is approved, the shelter will open and operate by the end of the year and will continue to operate for the next two years, authorities said. This year's overflow options include continuing operations at an undisclosed location that can accommodate 130 people. The hotel is also operated as part of a partnership with End Homelessness Utah, a nonprofit organization. According to the county's website, between 40 and 60 people affected by homelessness are currently being provided with food.
Millcreek Shelter in Salt Lake is run by Switchpoint, which manages the St. George homeless shelter. We are also working to find long-term solutions that involve other communities to make homelessness short, rare and unique, "Hill said.
